[Show content] [Show crashlogs] [Replace file] Welcome to the first full release of my X Window environment "AmiCygnix"!
This package is completely recompiled compared to the Cygnix prereleases.
This is the base archive you need to install first, before you can install
and run any AmiCygnix application.
New in this release:
--------------------
* The basic software is now splitted into two separate packages:
- The base package. If you want to install and use any other AmiCygnix
application, you must install this package first.
- With the optional tools package you can extend the base installation with
a filer, an internet browser, several preference editors and viewers and
other useful tools. Everyone who wants to work seriously with AmiCygnix,
should install this package too.
* AmiCygnix has now a complete new desktop. The Enlightenment window manager
is not included anymore. These programs are the base for new desktop:
- The window manager OpenBox. Responsible for the design and handling
of the X11 windows.
- The panel LXPanel. Provides a launch bar, a taskbar, a systray
and much much more.
- The desktop manager IDesk. Manages the desktop icons.
* The X server has now mouse wheel support. Because X11R6.3 doesn't support
this directly, the mouse events are translated to arrow key events.
* Three new display drivers:
- picasso96: Simply a rewritten driver to the Picasso96 API. It replaces
the old cybergraphx driver, although there is no real ad-
vantage. The old cybergraphx driver is still available. Use
it, if you have problems with the picasso96 drivers.
- picasso96pip: Opens an overlay window on the workbench. The best way
to work with amiga and amicygnix apps at the same time.
Provides a menu, when pushing the right button outside
the X11 display.
- picasso96clonewb: Same as picasso96, but provides an amiga screen bar
in the style of the workbench screen.
* Includes an AmigaOS 4 icon theme according to the "freedesktop icon theme
specification".
This theme is enabled by default, but you can use and install other
icon themes too.
Most of these icons are made by Mason and are included with his kindly
permission. Thanks you very much!
* All GTK2 programs do support the amiga clipboard now. You can use the
standard key combinations RAmiga + C, RAmiga + V and RAmiga + X to copy,
paste and cut text like in normal amiga programs.
* If a program scans the list of devices, it also includes all existing
assigns.
* The Alt and Alt+Shift key combinations are now better supported.
* All environment variables must now be located in "ENVARC:Cygnix". The
variables in "ENVARC:" will be ignored. This avoids collisions with
other unix ports.
* All AmiCygnix programs don't use the typical unix like assigns "usr:",
"bin:", "etc:" and "var:" anymore. This is for better compatibility to
other unix ports and the OS4 SDK. Many problems of the prerelease were
caused by these assigns.
* AmiCygnix is now completely compiled for newlib.library. Compared to the
clib2 binaries of the Cygnix prerelease this causes a better performance.
What is X11?
------------
The X Window System is the base for the all graphical user interfaces on unix
or linux systems. No matter which GUI-toolkit is used, on the lowest level
works X11.
The system is splitted into a server and in a client part, which is typical
for unix like systems. The server is responsible for processing the graphics
and handles the user events like mouse-moves or key-events. The client finally
is an application (e.g. a paint-program or a text-editor), which is using this
system for displaying his windows.
What is the advantage to have this on an amiga-system? It makes it easier to
port open source software to the amiga, because the sources for the GUI part
can be compiled without any (or at least very few) changes.
Installation
------------
1. Doubleclick on the "Install" icon in the unpacked AmiCygnix package.
Everything will be installed automatically. Please follow the
instructions of the installer script.
An already installed Cygnix prerelease package will be recognized, but
cannot be updated. An AmiCygnix installation will be overwritten.
But I recommend to install AmiCygnix from scratch to avoid problems.
Please do not install by hand!!
2. Afterwards you should reset your amiga.
