I use it partly for additional charsets, but mostly because libparserutils exhibits some strange crashes when used with newlib.library's internal iconv.  It's something I've been unable to make a reproduceable test case for, even piping the same data back through lpu using a test executable won't crash it.  Whether the bug is in NetSurf, lpu or newlib.library is a mystery, but no such problems when lpu is built against libiconv instead.
