I have a driver here, that uses composition, but it does not work well. At the moment I stopped development, maybe I'll give it a try later.

I'm unsure about how the graphics drivers works but have you considered about doing one that uses composition? 
 
My hope is that if it's possible to do a composition driver it would remove the speed penality when using amicygnix on a 32bit screen.
