i have since moons the same problem using a WAVE keyboard from Logitech 
and found the solution with using the right ALT key rather annoying aswell. 
 
Have you tried using the right CTRL key? 
It fits much better and one can learn to spread his fingers after some time :-) 
 
Just an idea for an update of your proggy or maybe an option?
