Short: Midnight Mansion HD rebuilt, with LAN and online co-op
Author: Vern Jensen (Midnight Mansion HD), Thom Yorke / UncleAcid1
(After Midnight), AmigaOS 4 port by Falke_34
Uploader: Falke_34
Type: game/platform
Version: 1.2
Requires: AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition, Mesa (OpenGL), AHI
Architecture: ppc-amigaos >= 4.1.0
License: Other (unofficial fan project, see "Legal")
Midnight Mansion HD: After Midnight
===================================
Midnight Mansion HD (ActionSoft, 2011) is Vern Jensen's side-scrolling
puzzle platformer: Jack Malone, fearless adventurer, works his way through
haunted mansions full of levers, keys, secret passages, Medusas, skeletons,
spiders and zappers, on the trail of a treasure hidden deep in Spider
Palace.
After Midnight is that game rebuilt from its original 2011 Mac release.
Its C source was reconstructed function by function and runs natively,
using the original game's own art, sound, music and mansions. With the new
options switched off, it plays exactly as the original did. Switch them on
and the house has some new rooms: multiplayer, controllers, fun options and
a Trophy Room.
This is the AmigaOS 4.1 PPC port of After Midnight 1.2.
Features
--------
* The 11 original mansions, 89 custom mansions by the Midnight Mansion
community, and Random Mansion
* Co-op for 2 - 4 players: take turns and share the lives
* Ghost Race: every player gets their own copy of the mansion, the others
show as ghosts, fastest out wins
* Playing together on the local network and online (lobby server, public
and private games, friend codes, chat)
* Game controllers in menus and play, with an on-screen keyboard
* Fun options: moon gravity, Oops! All Spiders, Pitch Black, Jack on
Espresso, Jack's Pinata Party, Nine-Lived Malone and more
* Extras: smooth room transitions, a centred main menu
* Trophy Room with each player's lifetime statistics
* High scores, saved games and player profiles
Installation
------------
Copy the drawer anywhere and start AfterMidnight from its icon or from the
Shell. Keep the drawer as it is:
AfterMidnight the program
Game Data/ the game's art, sound, music and mansions
Game Data Extras/ After Midnight's additions: menu buttons, the
multiplayer screen, sounds, player figures and the
89 custom mansions
userdata/ saved games, profiles and settings (made by the game)
"Game Data Extras" is needed: without it the game shows the original menu
only, without Multiplayer, Random Mansion and Trophy Room.
Do not copy the drawer straight into the root of a partition (for example
"Work:"), but into a drawer of its own (for example "Work:Games/
AfterMidnight").
Your own custom mansions go into a drawer "Midnight Mansion HD Custom
Mansions" next to the program, as in the original game.
Requirements:
* OpenGL through Mesa and a graphics card supported by the RadeonSI
driver (Radeon HD 7000 series / GCN or newer). Tested on a Radeon R7.
* AHI for sound.
* For network play: a running TCP/IP stack (Roadshow).
Controls
--------
Keyboard Controller
Walk / climb Arrow keys (keypad 4 6 8 2) Stick or d-pad
Jump Space (keypad 7 / 9 to A
jump left / right)
Action: levers, signs Return X or B
Map M Y or Back
Pause Escape Start
Chat (network games) T
In menus, A chooses and B goes back; any button closes a sign. All keys
can be changed under Options -> Controls, the controller's buttons under
Options -> Controls -> Controllers..., which also picks the controller
that runs the menus.
First time? Go to the Hint House first!
Playing together
----------------
From the title screen choose Multiplayer, then a game type.
* One computer: "Add a player", choose their controls (the keyboard or a
controller) and their profile, then a mansion. Co-op and Ghost Race.
* Local network: one computer hosts, the others find the game in their
list (or use "Join by address"). Ports: TCP 47474, and UDP 47475 for
finding games.
* Online: "Play online..." lists public games and your friends' private
ones. Host a public or a private game (friends see it, anyone else
needs its code, such as RAVEN-4821), or join with a code. Both
computers connect out to the lobby server, so nobody has to open ports
on their router. The server's address is kept in userdata/Online.txt.
Every computer needs the mansion the host picks. The network versions of
After Midnight 1.2 play together: AmigaOS 4, Mac, Linux and PS3.
Usage notes
-----------
* Saved games, player profiles, settings and high scores are kept in
PROGDIR:userdata.
* Log output goes to PROGDIR:stdout.txt. Turn it off with
"SetEnv MM_NOLOG 1".
* The stack size (4 MB) is set inside the program.
* Arcade Split Screen is not available in the AmigaOS 4 version yet:
choosing it shows a message, and the game carries on.
AmigaOS 4 port notes
--------------------
* One static binary with SDL 2 (no SDL2 installation needed).
* The coroutines behind the multiplayer modes got their own PowerPC
context switch (SysV ABI, without AltiVec).
* AmigaDOS paths: the game builds paths like "Saved Games//Max", which
AmigaDOS reads as "parent drawer". All file access is normalised, and
drawers are made with dos.library.
* The game's OpenGL 1.x functions are fetched with SDL_GL_GetProcAddress
once the window is open.
* Network: BSD sockets through newlib and Roadshow; the list of network
interfaces (for finding games on the local network) is read with
Roadshow's interface calls.
* Big-endian: nothing to do, the game already runs on the PS3 (PowerPC)
and keeps its files and network data in a fixed byte order.
